Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at EMDR Indiana

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy is not your typical ketamine treatment.

Many ketamine providers focus primarily on the medicine itself. At EMDR Indiana, the ketamine is only part of the story. What makes our approach genuinely different is the deep, intentional psychotherapy that surrounds it. Before, during, and after your KAP experience, you are held within a structured therapeutic process, guided by an experienced, trauma-informed therapist who knows how to help you make meaning of what emerges, integrate what surfaces, and translate profound moments of insight into real, lasting change.

KAP works by creating a window of neurological openness in which the brain becomes more flexible, more receptive, and more capable of forming new connections and releasing old patterns. In the hands of a skilled therapist, that window becomes an extraordinary opportunity. We use it intentionally, weaving in IFS and somatic awareness to help you access parts of yourself that are often difficult to reach in ordinary states of consciousness. Ketamine helps unlock the buried grief, the frozen parts, the beliefs about yourself that have resisted every other approach.

This is healing that goes to places that talk therapy alone sometimes can't reach.

KAP may be right for you if you've felt stuck in traditional therapy, if you're carrying trauma or depression that hasn't responded to other treatments, or if you're simply ready for a deeper, more expansive experience of healing than you've been able to access before. If you're curious, we'd love to have an honest conversation about whether it's the right fit.

I'm excited to offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP), which is a research-backed, intentionally guided approach to healing that goes far beyond what traditional therapy or medication alone can offer.

The ketamine we use is sublingual, taken orally as a dissolvable tablet, not an IV infusion or nasal spray. This method is gentle, accessible, and specifically chosen because it fosters the kind of soft, expansive inner state most conducive to deep therapeutic work. You're not in a clinical chair hooked up to an IV, you're in a safe, comfortable, therapeutically held space, supported every step of the way.

My prescribing partner is Journey Clinical. Their team handles everything on the medical side —including evaluating eligibility, designing a personalized treatment protocol, prescribing the medication, and monitoring your progress. I handle the therapeutic side, including preparing you for the experience, being present with you during the session, and guiding you through the integration process afterward. Integration is where the real magic happens. The insights, emotions, and openings that emerge during a KAP session are profound, but it's the careful, skilled therapeutic work that follows that transforms those moments into lasting change.

KAP tends to be especially powerful for people who feel stuck, whether it be in their trauma, their depression, their anxiety, or in a therapy process that has plateaued. If something in you is curious, that curiosity is worth following. Reach out and let's have an honest conversation about whether this might be the next right step for you.

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine has been used safely in medical settings for decades. In recent years, research has confirmed what many therapists and clients have experienced firsthand. It is one of the most promising tools available for treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and the kind of deep, stuck suffering that hasn't responded to traditional approaches.

What makes ketamine genuinely remarkable is how quickly it works. Unlike conventional antidepressants that can take weeks to build effect, ketamine's impact on mood and mental flexibility can be felt within hours. When those effects are supported by skilled psychotherapy (which is exactly what we do) the relief tends to be deeper and far more lasting than the medication alone could produce.

On a neurological level, ketamine works by temporarily blocking NMDA receptors while stimulating AMPA receptors. This creates a state of enhanced neuroplasticity in which the brain becomes more flexible, more open, and more capable of forming new neural connections. In plain terms, it loosens the grip of old patterns and opens a window in which real change becomes possible. Skilled therapeutic work inside that window is what turns possibility into transformation.

Ketamine can be administered in several ways, including IV infusion, intramuscular injection, nasal spray, and sublingual lozenges. At EMDR Indiana, we use sublingual lozenges exclusively. No needles, no clinical equipment, no harsh transitions. Just a soft, expansive inner state and a skilled therapist beside you the entire time.

"Ketamine opens the doors of perception, allowing people to step outside their usual patterns of thinking and see new possibilities for healing."

Dr. Phil Wolfson, Author of "The Ketamine Papers" and pioneer in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy

The effects of ketamine last about 45 minutes and are typically described as pleasant and calming. You may feel a sense of detachment from your body or experience expanded awareness and shifts in perception. Because ketamine temporarily reduces motor and verbal abilities, you’ll be lying down in a comfortable position throughout the session.

I will be with you at all times, making sure you are comfortable and at peace. Once the medicine’s effects wear off, we’ll spend the rest of the appointment processing and discussing your experience. Even if it feels difficult to put into words, most people find that the insights gained feel clear and meaningful.

Price and Payment Options

For new patients, the initial medical consultation with Journey Clinical is $362 and includes doses for two sessions. Ongoing treatment requires a follow-up with Journey and 6 more doses for $318. This is billed separately and handled exclusively through Journey Clinical. THESE RATES ARE SET BY JOURNEY CLINICAL AND ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

The therapy portion with EMDR Indiana starts with an Intake session at $175. From there, we will schedule 2-hour dosing sessions in my office, priced at $300 each. After each dose, we will have a 50-minute therapy integration session for $175. After two in-person dosing sessions, some people can transition to at-home dosing, which costs only $75.

A complete treatment course of KAP typically consists of 6 to 8 doses. The price of follow-up KAP rounds varies depending on your needs and the frequency of sessions. The duration of dosing, preparation, and integration sessions are tailored to your needs, which may impact the total cost. Options will be discussed when scheduling.

EMDR Indiana is not in-network with insurance, but if your plan includes out-of-network benefits, you may be eligible for reimbursement for intake and integration sessions. I can help you check your coverage and understand what your plan offers.

To make Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) more affordable, payment can be divided into segments. I accept HSA cards, all major credit/debit cards, and CareCredit. Payment plans may also be available through Affirm for those who qualify.

The medical consultation and medication costs are paid directly to Journey Clinical.

Make your therapy dollars count

Traditional weekly therapy averages $150 or more per session, and for many people navigating trauma, depression, or anxiety that hasn't responded to conventional approaches, meaningful progress can take 30, 40, even 50 sessions or more. That's $4,500 to $7,500 and often years of showing up week after week, making incremental progress, before something truly shifts.

KAP is designed to work differently. By combining the brain's heightened neuroplasticity during a ketamine experience with deep, skilled psychotherapy before, during, and after, we create conditions for the kind of profound breakthroughs that can take traditional therapy years to reach. Many clients experience more meaningful movement in a handful of KAP sessions than they have in months or years of weekly work.

That doesn't mean KAP replaces all therapy. Integration and continued support matter deeply. However, for the right person, the investment in KAP often represents not just a more powerful path to healing, but a more efficient one. Fewer total sessions. Faster relief. And a quality of change that goes to the root rather than managing the surface.

You're not just paying for a session. You're investing in a faster, deeper, more lasting path to the life you've been working toward.

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy FAQs:

What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy like?

Our Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) process is designed to provide a structured, supportive, and personalized experience that integrates ketamine with therapy for deep healing. Here’s what to expect:

Step 1: Book a Free Consultation- Your journey starts with a free consultation where we discuss your mental health history, current challenges, and therapy goals to determine if KAP is the right fit for you.

Step 2: Initial Consultation with Journey Clinical- If you decide to move forward, you’ll have a virtual evaluation with a Journey Clinical clinician via Zoom. They will:

  • Review your medical and psychiatric history

  • Provide education on KAP

  • Determine if KAP is appropriate for you

If approved, Journey Clinical’s medical team will create a personalized treatment plan and prescribe a small supply of ketamine lozenges (enough for your first two sessions). They will also provide instructions on taking your vitals and self-administering the medication ahead of your sessions.

Step 3: Intake & Intention-Setting Session-Before beginning KAP, we’ll meet for a 50-minute intake and intention-setting session. This is an important step where we take time to explore your mental health history, past experiences with therapy, and any challenges you’ve been facing. Together, we’ll discuss your thoughts and feelings about KAP, addressing any concerns or questions you may have. This session is also an opportunity to identify your personal strengths, clarify your goals, and set clear intentions for your journey. By understanding where you’re starting from and what you hope to gain, we can create a therapeutic experience that is meaningful, grounded, and tailored to your needs. We will also review the dosing protocol. This helps you mentally and emotionally prepare for the experience by discussing what to expect and aligning on the therapeutic process

Step 5: KAP Dosing Session- A ketamine dosing session lasts 2 hours. During the session, you will self-administer your ketamine lozenge in a comfortable, reclining position. You’ll wear an eye mask and listen to calming music to support your experience. The ketamine portion of the session is largely internal and introspective, but I will be present throughout the entire process to hold space and provide support as needed. Once you regain full awareness we will debrief the experience and explore initial thoughts and feelings.

Step 6: Integration Sessions- Following each dosing session, we’ll meet for integration therapy to process the thoughts, emotions, and insights that arose during your experience. These sessions help you make sense of your journey and prepare for future dosing sessions.

Step 7: Follow-Up Consultations with Journey Clinical- After your first KAP session, Journey Clinical’s medical team will schedule regular follow-ups to monitor your progress and, if appropriate, prescribe refills for your ketamine lozenges. These check-ins happen at least once per quarter but may be more frequent depending on your individualized treatment plan.

Is Ketamine safe?

Yes, ketamine is a safe and well-researched treatment when used appropriately under medical supervision. It has been used in medical settings for decades and is FDA-approved as an anesthetic. In recent years, extensive research has shown its effectiveness in treating depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other mental health conditions.

At EMDR Indiana, we partner with Journey Clinical, a team of medical professionals who carefully assess each client’s eligibility and provide personalized treatment plans, dosing guidance, and ongoing monitoring to ensure safety throughout the process.

While ketamine is generally well-tolerated, some temporary effects, such as dizziness, mild nausea, may occur during the session. These effects typically subside within an hour. Our therapy-guided approach ensures that you are in a safe, comfortable environment with professional support throughout your experience.

How many Ketamine assisted sessions will I need?

The number of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) sessions needed varies from person to person. Most people start with two dosing sessions to gauge their response and experience the initial benefits. However, research and clinical experience suggest that more potent and longer-lasting effects are typically seen with 6 to 8 dosing sessions over time.

Every individual’s healing journey is unique, and the ideal number of sessions depends on factors such as your treatment goals, response to ketamine, and overall mental health needs. During our work together, we will regularly assess your progress and determine the best course of treatment for you.
